8-years ago, CHP Officer Kevin Briggs talked this young man out of jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge.

That young man’s name is Kevin Berthia.
Today he is 30 years old and married with 2 children.
This week he presented Officer Briggs with an award on behalf of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The story of how Officer Briggs talked Kevin down is remarkable.

As you can see in the picture, Kevin is literally one step away from jumping to his death. But for more than hour, the officer listened to Kevin pour his heart out about his troubles and told him, “I know you think things are bad, but they can get better.”

Kevin says, “Officer Briggs never made me feel guilty for the situation I was in. He made feel like, I understand why you are here, but there are alternatives”

Kevin is just one of countless lives Briggs has saved over his 23 year career.

Briggs, who was promoted to Sergeant five years ago, is humble about what he does. He says, ”they make the decision, when they step back over that rail it takes a tremendous amount of courage”

I salute Sergeant Briggs!

The philosophies in Star Trek are kinda part of the actual setting. If you don’t get that, why are you allowed to make Star Trek movies.

Sigh. The whole point of Star Trek is that it’s philosophical. If you don’t want philosophical Science Fiction, there’s plenty of that for you to enjoy, but Star Trek is philosophical. Philosophy is part of Star Trek’s DNA, and if you’re given the captain’s chair, you’d better damn well respect that.

This just… hurts.

This reminds me of all the executives being hired to run YouTube networks who probably couldn’t name more than one YouTube channel.

It makes me really, really sad that these writers/producers apparently do not understand Star Trek or its fandom at all. But I guess it doesn’t matter, right? New blood, lol! The Twitter Generation doesn’t care about philosophy and the girls definitely don’t want to watch a film that isn’t about babies!

I can only hope the other writers who love Star Trek can balance it out. But IDK.

One of my favorite things about Star Trek is not only that is it philosophical, but that it has the capability to reach out and touch different people regardless of age/location/gender/job/education - there is something in Star Trek for everyone. It is an idea, for all that it showcases other species, about humanity, and just what good we are capable of. Deep Space Nine wasn’t the story of a dude on a far away space station with a background cast that popped in from time to time. It is a the story of many people whose lives become entwined in ways they could never have envisioned. It is the story of a man who becomes something more because he is surrounded by friends from all walks of the universe, put into a situation where he makes decisions he believes in and hopes to the stars that he is right.

ST Reboot is the same. It’s a film, so maybe the story is harder to tell in two and a half hours, but the very bones (no pun intended) of the story are firm, and the actors are, if I may, absolutely incredible. They have taken this story to heart and become a family that’s pushed across the message and philosophy in an amazing way. These films have been huge, and it’s not because of the action, but about the underlying characterisation that becomes an utterly compelling, intrinsically human story. And I believe that.

I understand the necessity of making money, of making a film that people new to Star Trek can see. But, JJ, you have done your cast and crew a disservice in saying that this movie doesn’t embody the heart of what ST is all about. They have taken what they were given and injected it with the philosophy that you don’t believe is necessary. Hats off to them. To be fair, I feel that perhaps your response was poorly worded, maybe that is not exactly what you meant, but I encourage you to see this film again and tell me if there exists a moment where these incredible people weren’t making a movie that is philosophical to its very bones.
